Regional Field Director, Value & Access

The Field Director (FD), Regional Accounts, is a field-based scientific leader reporting to the Value & Access (V&A) National Field Director (NFD), within Medical Affairs + Health Impact (MHI), with responsibility to directly manage field engagement activity with Healthcare Access Decision Makers (HCDMs) at the Regional account level.  The FD will lead the Medical Outcomes & Science Liaisons (MOSLs) to ensure scientific Payer Medical Objectives and Strategies across all AbbVie therapies are executed effectively and compliantly with the respective MOSL field team.  The FD combines management capability with a technical and scientific background and expertise in managed care, outcomes research, health economics, and healthcare landscape and policy to coach the MOSL team and work alongside appropriate cross-functional partners to develop and implement Regional account HCDM channel strategy. The FD will also collaborate, appropriately influence, and lead without direct authority in a matrixed environment as necessary to deliver relevant training, resources, and tools to advance the MOSL team capability to evolve medical engagement among the changing HCDM Customer.

  1. Lead Regional MOSL team to address key customer and regional field challenges. Lead and strategically develop MOSLs to further advance their scientific and business capabilities and enhance professional development while fostering positive team culture.
  2. Leverage scientific knowledge, managed care expertise and pharmacoeconomic skills to coach and lead individual MOSLs to fully engage and influence key HCDMs across various payer organizations to AbbVie interests.  In collaboration with MOSLs, develop trusted partnerships with key Regional HCDMs to represent the Payer voice, challenges and needs within the organization.
  3. Collaborate with appropriate Medical personnel across entire AbbVie portfolio to shape payer medical strategy and tactics to optimize market access for new and in-line products or indications with Regional HCDM accounts and across various channels.  Along with NFD, regional accountability for elevated and appropriate field execution of AbbVie payer medical tactics and scientific business strategies as well as ensure appropriate implementation and use of field resources and training to deliver results for business/clinical strategies, while protecting AbbVie from risk.
  4. Appropriately partner with cross-functional field leaders, including but not limited to Market Access Regional Managers, Medical Science Liaison Regional Field Directors, Health Economics and Outcomes Research Directors, to cultivate in-field team effectiveness in order to accomplish aligned business goals. In working with internal leadership partners, leverage and integrate scientific knowledge, managed care/business acumen and healthcare landscape/policy awareness to anticipate and mitigate medically-related payer challenges impacting the region of responsibility as well as elevating insights, as appropriate.
  5. Responsible for monitoring Regional Field team metrics and reporting, support the implementation of strategies to enhance field efficiency and innovation, as well as to manage compliance related to MOSL initiatives and activities.
  6. Maintain regulatory and compliance knowledge to ensure Regional MOSL adherence and to represent Regional MOSL team on applicable internal and external regulatory practices.  Support NFD by identification of opportunities and seek and influence compliant solutions to evolve In Field Ways of Working based on the changing HCDM Customer and their medical needs. Accountable for compliance within designated team.
  7. Assist NFD with on-going special projects and strategic thinking for advancement of Regional MOSL Field team initiatives. Represent V&A Regional Account or Payer Channel field voice in relevant internal meetings or workstreams as delegated by the NFD.
  8. Represent and advocate Regional MOSL field needs with internal cross functional partners, such as Legal, Compliance, Operations, Regulatory, etc., as well as during Senior AbbVie management meetings, to appropriately influence results.
  9. Present, facilitate, and manage competently with both internal and external Senior leadership/customers to appropriately influence results.
  10. Advocate for allocation and integration of MOSL resources in support of overarching Regional Field strategy and NFD Leadership direction. Oversee Performance Management process, Growth Plan, and Professional Development as well as Succession Planning for designated Regional MOSL team.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree required, preferably M.D., D.O., Pharm.D. or Ph.D.
  • The position requires five (5) to seven (7) years of experience in a Managed Care/PBM, VA/DoD, CMS, State Medicaid, health care consulting, pharmaceutical industry or related environment.  Account management experience in a commercial or clinical setting is preferred. In addition to clinical and therapeutic expertise, an understanding of the business of healthcare policy and managed markets from the perspective of clinical, regulatory, commercial and policy issues affecting the pharmaceutical and health insurance environments preferred.
  • Previous direct people management experience preferred, preferably with pharma management and corporate experience and leading a field medical team.
  • Advanced scientific and business acumen – Includes sophisticated understanding of the healthcare landscape.
  • High Emotional Intelligence. Excellent communication skills (verbal, written) with superior active listening skills.
  • Self-motivated and solutions-oriented.
  • Advanced ability to network and collaborate effectively in a matrixed environment.
  • Advanced technical expertise and business analytic skills.
  • Innovative problem-solving, critical- and strategic thinking skills.
  • Ability to manage and lead multiple projects and timelines supported by excellent organizational and project management skills.

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
