Applying quickly matters more than most candidates realise.
Many health economists search for new roles actively, but I’m often surprised by how slowly some people move once they find a role that clearly fits their profile. They postpone, hesitate, often for no good reason. The assumption seems to be that timing doesn’t matter, that you can apply in a few days, over the weekend, or next week, and your chances stay the same.
When a health economics role appears on EuropeanHealthEconomics.com, it attracts a small group of suitable candidates. Some apply immediately. Others wait.
Here’s what most candidates underestimate.
Hiring managers are busy
Interviewing isn’t their main job. It’s an extra task on top of managing teams, projects and other priorities. Most want to fill the role quickly and move on.
In practice, the process often works like this: a few strong CVs arrive early, three candidates get shortlisted and interviewed, and one turns out to be a strong match.
When a hiring manager finds that candidate, they don’t wait another week to collect more CVs or run another round of interviews. They’re also watching for competing offers from other companies.
The first strong candidate gets an offer and is hired. The role is filled. The opportunity is gone while you’re still organising your application.
What this means for you
When you see a role that fits your background and career direction, apply. Don’t postpone. Have your CV ready. Apply during your lunch break or the same evening. Being among the first solid applications increases your chances of being seen, shortlisted and interviewed. Waiting rarely improves your position. Often it removes you from the process before you even realise it.
Get jobs early with Pro Membership
To help you be among the first, we built the Pro-jäsenyys at EuropeanHealthEconomics.com. Pro members see new roles as soon as we find them. Around 70% of these roles never appear on free job boards at all. The goal is simple: a speed advantage when timing actually matters.
This week alone, Pro Members had early access to 91 health economics roles. The opportunities are there. Apply before they’re not.
