Basel, Switzerland.

The new Chair of Health Economics, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Armando Meier, at the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Basel invites applications for a PhD position (teaching and research assistant). The position is fully funded and supported by a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) grant. The successful applicant will be working on topics related to health, labor, and behavioral economics.

Prof. Dr. Armando Meier has worked, among others, on research examining how to increase vaccination uptake, the impacts of emotions on decision-making, and the long-run effects of the gender environment at school on occupational sorting and the wage gap.

You will become part of an international research group in an English-speaking environment and are welcome to interact closely with members of the new Basel Center for Health Economics (BCHE). The Center also includes groups working on behavioral health economics and development economics at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH). Your research contributes to SNSF projects related to health and labor economics, including an SNSF project on “Economic, Behavioral, and Health Consequences of Medical Guidelines” that investigates doctor decision-making following medical tests and its impacts on health outcomes.

You will conduct high-level scientific research towards a PhD and assist and participate in research, teaching and administrative tasks. Teaching duties may be carried out in German or English. The position will entail a performance review after 1 year after which the position can be extended to a total of 4 years.

  • You are on your way to or already have an excellent MSc degree (or equivalent) in a field such as Economics, Econometrics, or Finance
  • You have very good knowledge of economics and are passionate and curious about doing impactful, interdisciplinary work in the domains of health, behavioral and/or labor economics, such as on understanding the impact of cancer screening guidelines on population health and labor market outcomes
  • You have a solid knowledge of econometrics and first experience with statistical programs such as STATA, R, or Python and a high willingness to attain excellent econometrics skills including on machine learning
  • You are fluent in written and spoken English

You get the opportunity to conduct high-quality research in a dynamic, innovative scientific working environment and the opportunity to interact with internationally renowned scientists from different disciplines. You will be part of a strongly research-oriented team with a collaborative and supportive atmosphere. The position is fully funded with an internationally competitive salary and additional resources available for conference travel. Additional funding for research stays can also be obtained.
