PATH’s Product and Market Advancement program is currently recruiting for a Summer Associate who is seeking to grow their career while making a difference in people’s lives. Our work is focused on product innovation, market strengthening, and systems improvement to ensure that essential products are accessible globally. The Summer Associate will work with team members to define problems, conduct analyses, and apply findings to address market-related failures in health equity that restrict access to life-saving products and interventions.
Specifically, the Summer Associate will join the Access to Medical Device Portfolio within the Product and Market Advancement program. This portfolio of work addresses barriers to medical device access in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with recent efforts focused on improving access to oxygen and respiratory equipment for COVID-19 response, and developing new systems and business models for managing medical devices more broadly.
The selected Summer Associate will provide critical research and analysis in support of the portfolio’s goal of broadening access to priority medical devices and respiratory care equipment. Key activities for the Summer Associate role may include:
- Conducting market research: Collaborate with PATH country teams to identify and characterize country-specific barriers to oxygen and medical device access; research and recommend innovative business models and/or market interventions to alleviate specific barriers to reliably accessing oxygen, respiratory care equipment, or other priority medical devices in LMICs.
- Evaluating potential market interventions: Support the evaluation of market intervention strategies for their suitability, health impact potential, and compatibility with existing systems.
- Data collection, modelling, and analysis: Create and manage databases to track data from facility assessments such as commodities inventory, monitoring and evaluation indicators, and global supply data; develop data-driven tools/models to inform procurement or maintenance decisions; create data visualizations for analysis and to support dissemination.
- Product and supply analysis: Conduct manufacturer landscapes, collect and analyze trade data, support pricing analyses, and develop market introduction strategies for new medical device products.
- Communicating analysis outputs: Synthesize evidence for target stakeholders in global health to inform decisions of government, donors, and Ministries of Health.
Required skills:
- Passionate about addressing health issues in low-resource settings with a demonstrated commitment to equity.
- Ability to derive strategic insights for country and global stakeholders from data analysis and primary research.
- Experience conducting analysis on economic and/or public health trade-offs to develop recommendations for broad audiences.
- Proven effectiveness working in a team-based environment, but capable also of working independently and taking initiative.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and thrive in fast-paced and high-pressure situations.
- Comfortable with working openly and transparently, sharing work-in-progress, failures, successes, and lessons-learned.
- Humble, self-driven, fast learner that functions well in a highly collaborative environment as part of a cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural team.
- Comfortable working in ambiguous situations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Fluent English language skills.
- Versatile and responsive working virtually and collaboratively with teams across the world.
- Ability and willingness to meet regularly during business hours in Washington D.C.
Required Experience:
- Graduate student in Business Administration, Economics, Public Policy, Public Health, or equivalent plus 1-2+ years’ relevant experience.
- Technical knowledge of: (a) market analysis to inform decision-making, and/or (b) health systems analysis, preferably within the context of LMICs.
- Consulting experience is a plus.
